OpenAI announces plan to acquire Ona for Codex cloud execution
OpenAI announced that it plans to acquire Ona, a company that builds secure cloud execution and orchestration technology.
OpenAI said Ona’s technology will be added to the Codex ecosystem. The company said Codex has more than 5 million weekly users and is being used for research, analysis, software development, and automation.
OpenAI said Ona provides secure, persistent environments where agents can access tools, systems, and context over time. The company said this could allow Codex work to continue beyond a single local device or active session.
OpenAI also said Ona’s model would allow agents to operate inside an organization’s own cloud environment, with controls over infrastructure, data, credentials, logs, and review workflows.
The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. Until closing, OpenAI and Ona will remain separate companies. If the deal closes, Ona’s team will join OpenAI and work with the Codex team.
