Anthropic is reportedly in talks to use Microsoft’s Maia AI chips
Anthropic is in early talks to rent servers powered by Microsoft-designed AI chips, based on Reuters coverage citing The Information.
The talks may not result in an agreement. Microsoft declined to comment to Reuters, and Anthropic did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A deal would support Microsoft’s effort to build a stronger custom AI chip business. Microsoft has developed its Maia chip line as part of a broader push to reduce reliance on Nvidia processors and compete with custom chip programs from Google and Amazon.
Microsoft introduced its second-generation Maia 200 AI chip in January. The chip is made by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. using 3-nanometer manufacturing technology and includes high-bandwidth memory.
Maia 200 also uses a large amount of SRAM, a type of memory that can improve performance for chatbots and other AI systems handling large numbers of requests.
Anthropic already has infrastructure relationships with Amazon and Google. A Microsoft chip deal would add another major cloud provider to its compute supply options.
