Anthropic disabled access to Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after U.S. government directive

Anthropic said it disabled access to Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 after receiving a U.S. government export-control directive.

According to Anthropic, the directive required the company to suspend access to the models by foreign nationals, including foreign-national employees inside and outside the United States. Anthropic said it disabled the models for all customers to ensure compliance.

Anthropic said the government cited national security authorities but did not provide specific written details of the concern. The company said its understanding was that the directive related to a potential jailbreak involving Fable 5.

Anthropic disputed the severity of the issue, saying it had received only verbal evidence of what it described as a narrow, non-universal jailbreak. The company said no universal jailbreak had been found against Fable 5 or Mythos 5.

Reuters and Axios also reported on the dispute. Axios described behind-the-scenes tension between Anthropic and U.S. officials. Anthropic said it was complying with the directive while working to restore access.
