OpenAI says Codex has passed 5 million weekly active users as it pushes into general knowledge work
OpenAI released a new report on June 2 titled The Next Era of Knowledge Work and positioned Codex as a broader productivity product, not only a coding tool. Codex now has more than 5 million weekly active users, up more than sixfold since the desktop app launched in February.
Developers remain the largest user group, but OpenAI says knowledge workers now account for about 20 percent of Codex users and are growing more than three times as fast. The company lists report writing, spreadsheets, presentations, contracts, research, data analysis, workflow automation, and lightweight internal tool building among the expanding use cases.
OpenAI also says the fastest-growing knowledge-work tasks are data analysis, research, and knowledge artifact creation. The report describes users running multiple Codex tasks in parallel to investigate data, draft materials, and automate workflows at the same time.
